Version 1 is Better Than Version None

Many of us make resolutions. When we read about a good habit, we plan to do the same. When we see someone else pursuing and benefiting from that habit, we think of following their path. But how many times do we actually take action? We all been in a situation at least once when we have procrastinated our plans.

We give various reasons for doing so:

  • The weather is not good.
  • My energy levels are low.
  • I have an important meeting to attend.
  • I have guests at home.
  • My kid is unwell.

The list goes on. At the end of the day, we feel bad. We resolve again to act on it the next day. The next day some other excuse keeps us busy.

One of the reasons we procrastinate anything is fear, fear of imperfection. We are very demanding of ourselves. We want to be and portray our best selves to the world. To err isn’t easy to accept.

These questions do a fantastic job of pulling us back. In this unrealistic demand of being perfect, we are harsh on ourselves. We do not want to attempt anything new till we know that we will be good at our first attempt. The unrealistic demand of being a pro in the first attempt itself or what the world will think about our imperfections holds us back.

I was going through one such experience. For a long time, my mom has been recommending I meditate. Almost for the last 3 years, she has been persistently coaxing me to start meditating. I have been doing an extraordinary job of coming up with creative excuses every time. For the last 3 years, I have been procrastinating. I was not sure how to start meditation.

  • What if my mind wanders?
  • Is it helpful?
  • In those fifteen minutes, I can do some other work. Maybe finish working on an important file or catch up on a movie or talk to a friend or call up mom and end up getting reminded and reprimanded again about the same topic.

One evening, I was attending the weekly mastermind session of my mentor. During the session, he made a statement;

Version 1 is better than Version None.

For some reason, this statement made a profound impact on me. I got reminded of several instances when I procrastinated trying something new.

His statement made a lasting impression on me. Trying is better than not trying at all. At least you will have the satisfaction of having attempted. Not trying is like giving up without fighting the battle.

I decided to try new things and ensure that I do not give excuses because Version 1 is Better Than Version None.

And yes, I have started meditating. I am enjoying this experience.

All you need to do is take the leap.

Share with me what you have been avoiding to do.

What held you back in trying it?

Happy Sharing!
